Unit 1: How We Organize Ourselves

CENTRAL IDEA:  Roles and choices contribute to the functioning of a system.

LINES OF INQUIRY

  • An inquiry into how systems are organized and constructed. (Function)

  • An inquiry into the interconnectedness of systems and structures. (Connection)

  • An inquiry into the roles and responsibilities of citizens in human system. (Responsibility)

Unit 2: How The World Works

CENTRAL IDEA:   Change in properties cause changes that sometimes ca be reversed.

LINES OF INQUIRY

  • An inquiry into the states of matter. (Function)

  • An inquiry into the events that cause changes. (Causation)

  • An inquiry into the effects of change. (Change)

Unit 3: Who We Are

CENTRAL IDEA:  People's Actions can Impact the World.

LINES OF INQUIRY

  • An inquiry into how people make a difference in other's lives. (Connection)

  • An inquiry into how character impacts others. (Responsibility)

  • An inquiry into why people take action. (Cause)

Unit 4:  Sharing the Planet

CENTRAL IDEA:   Nature Impacts Human Interactions.

LINES OF INQUIRY

  • How living things depend on each other and their environment to survive. (Function)

  • How limits on resources affect the production and consumption of our resources. (Causation)

  • Why people have different points of view about preserving the environment (Perspective)

Unit 5:  Where We Are in Place and Time

  • An inquiry into events that change our natural environment. (Causation)

  • An inquiry into how the past shapes the future. (Connection)

  • An inquiry into the ways and reasons to preserve and document events. (Form/Responsibility)

CENTRAL IDEA:  Nature Can Inspire Creativity

  • An inquiry into how simple mapping tools and the arts can help us describe different landforms and populations.

  • An inquiry into how living things survive in their environment.

  • An inquiry into how the experience of living things can be expresses through different points of view.
