Unit 1: How We Organize Ourselves

CENTRAL IDEA:  Values can affect our community.

  • An inquiry into the rules and laws that govern our lives. (Form)

  • An inquiry into collaboration. (Responsibility)

 

Unit 2: How The World Works

CENTRAL IDEA:   Inherited traits can help living things survive.

LINES OF INQUIRY

  • An inquiry into how living organisms are composed of parts. (Form)

  • An inquiry into how parts help organisms grow and survive. (Function)

  • An inquiry into why some organisms look and behave a like. (Causation)

Unit 3:  Where We are in Place and Time.

CENTRAL IDEA:  Innovations may cause changes in communities over time.

LINES OF INQUIRY

  • Innovations over time. (Form)

  • How transportation and institutions have changed over time. (Change)

  • Why transportation and institutions have changed over time. (Causation)

Unit 4:  Sharing the Planet

CENTRAL IDEA:   People exchange goods and services in order to fulfill their wants and need.

LINES OF INQUIRY

  • An inquiry into goods and services. (Form)

  • An inquiry into the goods and services our community needs. (Connection)

  • An inquiry into the reasons why people trade with each other. (Causation)

Unit 5:   Who we are

CENTRAL IDEA:  Symbols and traditions reflect our national identity.

LINES OF INQUIRY

  • An inquiry into significance of national symbols, landmarks and essential documents. (Reflection)

  • An inquiry into why we observe national holidays and the heroes associated with them. (Connection)

  • An inquiry into our responsibility to learn how to express our national identity. (Responsibility)

 

Unit 6:   How we Express Ourselves

CENTRAL IDEA:  People can use a variety of mediums to communicate.

  • An inquiry into learning the elements the arts ( art, dance, music and theater ) (Form)

  • An inquiry into how everyone can express themselves through the arts (reflection)
